Philosophy Time

By Richard

Time for another musing!! I think this time we are going to talk about me and my “philosophy” of life as I try to live it.

First of all, I am not a religious man. I am NOT Catholic, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Pagan, Satanic, Bhuddhist or any recognized religion. In fact, the closest “religion” I favor is a mock religion called Pastafarianism (originally intended as a mockery of real religions, Pastafarians became real when their principles became popular) that has an overall irreverent tone to ALL religions, even its own.

That being said, I consider myself a spiritual man. The difference being I tend to want to be good and compassionate for humans sake and not for some self servingtrip to the afterlife. I am striving to be a better person and a better man every day, especially after being a total buttwad for most of my early years. I try to do good and be respectful of others and myself. It is difficult- look at any controversial meme on the internet and you can see a lot of the inhumanity of men in the comments section.

My greatest pleasure in life has been and hopefully will be, making others happy. I treasure the moment when I tell a joke (good, bad, witty, dumb) and make a friend (or even an enemy) smile and laugh. Making others happy makes me happy.

That being said, I have adopted a very, very simple motto for my senior years that I will be working to make a full time commitment to and not just when it is convenient matter. And having recently realized where I heard it and who said it, I give you my new daily mantra.

   “Be nice.”

Simple, elegant and workable. I do not agree with your point of view? Be nice.  I love you and your personality? Be nice. You drove me crazy with your quirks? Be nice. Be nice to others and hopefully, eventually you have others being nice to you. And if they aren’t nice? Well, that is on them, isn’t it?

  “Be nice.”

A simple but difficult chore in today's hectic and so uncivil world. It does not matter to me your ethnicity, your religion, your gender, your sexual preference, your political views- none of that matters if you are nice to me, I will be nice to you. He!!, I may hate your guts (and there are damn few people I actually hate) and as long as you are nice to me, I will be nice to you. I will also strive to be nice to you especially if you are NOT nice to me. Why? Because I will not lower myself to being mean if I can help it.

  “Be nice.”

Sounds simple doesn’t it? It isn’t. I have a short temper. Some things push my buttons easier than others. I yell at people and act snarky when they “let me down”. But I am trying to be a better man and a better person, which I think is a lofty goal.  So, if you see me in my daily life and I need reminding, feel free to remind me of my mission statement.

  “Be nice.”

Oh, and by the way, I remembered where I heard that simple credo before. Anyone else remember a little cult movie called Roadhouse and a certain bouncer named Dalton?
